Jerome was born in Monterey Park, California. He is the son of Bud and Levy Torres. He has played tennis since he was a small child, and growing up, tennis was his primary sport. He played collegiately for Mount San Antonio College where he received his Associate’s Degree in General Ed. After MSAC, he played #1 for the University of Los Angeles on full athletic scholarship. He competed against Paul Anacone, Peter Fleming, Steve Austin, Eddie Edwards, and Robert Vantoff among others.
He played satellites and the Penn Circuit after college. He later worked with Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton. He moved to Atlanta where he was ranked top 5 in Georgia. Also during his time in Georgia, Jerome worked for the City of Atlanta Fire Department. He later moved to upstate New York where he was an instructor at Eastside Country Club in Syracuse, and also at Drumlins on the Syracuse campus and at Gold’s Gym, also at Syracuse. While teaching tennis at Gold’s, Jerome coached the Christian’s Brother’s Academy high school team, and led them to five sectional championships. He later took Cazenovia High School’s women’s team to a sectional championship. During his time in New York, Jerome helped develop numerous high school players into Division I scholarship athletes. Jerome’s son (David) is in his last year in the military, and pursuing pharmacy on the GI bill down here in Harker Heights. Jerome came to Texas for to be closer to his son and for the warmer climate. He has been teaching at the Central Texas Athletic Center since 2017.
When Jerome is not on or near a tennis court helping his students improve, he enjoys fishing, shooting pool, cooking, and watching movies. Jerome does not like people who cheat, eggplant, or over-the-top cold weather. Jerome considers the fact that he is very good at refinishing hardwood floors to be an interesting thing about him.
