Blake grew up in the Panama Canal Zone and in Palestine, Texas. He played tennis for Eastern Kentucky University on full scholarship. Upon graduation, Blake helped run Newk’s, one of the nation’s top Junior Development academies. Over his career, he has helped develop tennis players who have played collegiately, and/or professionally.
Prior to general manager duties at the Central Texas Athletic Club, Blake directed tennis operations at four private clubs – Spindletop Hall (Lexington, Kentucky), the Country Club of Little Rock (Little Rock, Arkansas), the Green Tennis Center (Columbia, Missouri), and Westheimer Indoor (Houston, TX). During his 14 years in Columbia, Blake was the Head Tennis Coach for the University of Missouri Tigers. Mizzou is a member of the SEC Conference. Prior to Mizzou, Blake coached the Maryland Terrapins in the ACC for five seasons. He guided both Maryland and Mizzou to their first NCAA tournament appearances, and still holds the record for most team wins for any tennis coach in Mizzou program history. A strong developer of talent, his teams and players were regulars in the NCAA rankings and at the NCAA Tournament. His teams and individual players had wins over Stanford, Texas, Texas A&M, Florida, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Notre Dame among others. He players were regularly on various Academic Dean’s lists and Conference Commissioner’s Honor Rolls. A believer in community service, he kept his players actively involved with efforts such as the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and work with local shelters. In the summers, Blake directed Mizzou’s large Nike Tennis Camps. On ten separate occasions, he was selected by the USTA Missouri Valley Section to coach the Missouri Valley Boys and Girl’s 18 Fed Cup Team at the National Team Championships in California.
Drawing from a 20-year career as a college coach, Blake created an athletic scholarship program called Your Athletic Scholarship (www.yourathleticscholarship.com). For high school athletes (and their parents) who want to continue playing their sport in college (possibly on athletic scholarship) the program guides them through every step they’ll need to take to make that a reality. When he is not in the office running every aspect of the CTXAC, Blake enjoys spending time with his family, playing video games, biking, cooking, fixing things, tennis, and watching Netflix. Blake’s wife, Julie, is the Dean of Student Development at Central Texas College. Blake and Julie have two children, Emily (23), and Samuel (19). The Starkeys are excited about moving to Central Texas and Blake intends to utilize every resource available to serve the Central Texas Athletic Club membership any way possible.
